How can one Family be so different? How is it he "red neck" can me the one to be proud of and not the "yank"?

In my family we are completely different, I grew up in the United States south but I and my extended family are from Canada. How is it that my cousins in Canada can be my polar opposed, they are unmotivated, don’t see the importance of education and see me as the red neck hick of the family. I'm in my early 20's I know exactly what I want to do with my life and volunteer in my church and community, and work about 20 hours a week while going to school full time. Yet my cousin in how have just hit their 20's one has yet to graduate high school and the other is unmotivated to even get a job. They make fun of how I talk and I’m supped to be unoffending but if the same to them do you would think I had kicked the dog they are all in a standoffish huff. Two worlds, two countries and two entirely different sets of values in one family. How does this happen, we each have a parents that was brought up in the same house with the exact same values yet the kids or completely differ. What happened?
