Why is political discussion so frustrating to people in the US?

My friends abroad, admittedly except for my friends from the middle east who don't discuss politics much, have no problems disagreeing with eachother about parties or issues and can discuss at length, but in the US my general impression is that people get really angry really quickly as soon as an opposing viewpoint is brought up. Any thoughts about why that might be?
